Fearless Freedom

The founder and CEO of the Fearless Fund shares the remarkable story of how she defended her life’s work in a landmark legal battle, drawing lessons from the civil rights movement and offering a playbook to help entrepreneurs, business leaders, and policymakers expand opportunity and build lasting economic prosperity.

When Arian Simone founded the Fearless Fund—the first venture capital fund built by women of color for women of color—she was addressing a persistent inequity in business: access to capital. Then she became the target of a landmark lawsuit.

In 2023, a conservative legal organization fresh off a Supreme Court victory against affirmative action sued Simone, arguing that the fund’s grant programs violated the Civil Rights Act of 1866—a law designed to empower formerly enslaved persons. At the center of a national battle over entrepreneurship, economic opportunity, and the future of efforts to expand access for historically overlooked founders, Simone engaged in a public fight that threatened her life’s work and legacy.

In Fearless Freedom, Simone takes readers behind the headlines and into strategy sessions to preserve the fund, its impact, and similar investment tools. Drawing on her experiences as an entrepreneur, investor, global advocate, and Queen Wa of Dawa Grand Bereby in Côte d’Ivoire, she shares lessons learned growing up in Detroit, at the feet of civil rights icons like Rosa Parks, and from mentors whose advice helped her build her groundbreaking firm and persevere when it came under attack.

Beyond her stirring personal narrative and hard-won leadership lessons, Simone also delivers practical “playbooks” for corporations, investors, policymakers, and entrepreneurs—vital for understanding how access to capital, economic mobility, and opportunity can strengthen businesses and communities alike. Part memoir and part leadership guide, Fearless Freedom is your blueprint for resilience and road map for creating pathways to growth, innovation, and long-term prosperity.
